Unclutter Your Facebook to Improve Your Photography Business

Does your Facebook Wall ever overwhelm you?  Are you tired of missing posts from your friends or maybe one of your favorite pages?  Do you like so many photo prop boutiques that you can’t remember which one had that cute hat?  I am going to share how I organize my Wall with you in an effort to bring some sense to the madness.

Let’s start by sharing my “Home” page with you.

There are different categories available on your wall down the left hand side of the screen.  There are your “Favorites” that include your “News Feed”, “Messages”, and “Events.”  As you can see, I have added “Close Friends” and “Hawaii Friends” to that category.  Where did I get those “lists?”

When you hover over a friend’s name and then “Friends,” a menu shows up.  Click “Add to list” to add your friend to “Close Friends” or “Acquaintances”.  If you would like to make a new list as I have shown above, click “Show all lists” and scroll to the bottom and click “+New list.”

Something else I do, with most of my friends, is go in to the “Settings” menu under that same “Friends” menu and turn off “Life Events”, “Games”, “Comments and Likes”, “Music and Videos” and “Other Activity” by turning off the checkmark.  I also choose whether I want to see “All updates”, “Most updates”, or “Only important” updates.  This is purely my preference to keep from cluttering up my wall with information that I am not that interested in for most people.  You can choose what you would like to leave on and off for your wall, of course.

The next category I’d like to talk about is “Interests.”  This is where you can really clean up your wall.  This category is down at the bottom of the left hand side of your “Home” page.  Click on “more” to open this page:

As you can see, I have added a few “interests” to this page.  What are these “interests?”  This is how you can organize all those pages that you like.  These are just some ideas for some ways to categorize your pages into “interests.”  Those boutiques you like to buy props from?  The dozens (or more) of photographer pages that you like for networking?  This is where they go.

When you “like” a page, hover over “Liked” to see this menu.  Your “Interest” categories will show up here.  Click on the “Interest” you would like that page to be under and then UNCLICK “Show in newsfeed.”  Don’t gasp!  They are still there but now you can control when you see them.  Go back to your interest page and click on the interest you want to peruse.  You can check on all your photographer friend’s pages or all those cute photo prop boutiques all at once.  Just be sure to go do that at least once a day so you don’t miss out on anything!

Now, you are probably feeling overwhelmed since you probably have hundreds of friends and like just as many pages.  Again, don’t worry!  This takes a while to do.  I tend to do just a few per day as I come across them and try very hard to remember to do these steps each time I make a new “friend” or like a new page.

One last thing, you can add some of your “Interests” or “Lists” to your “Favorites” category for easier access to them.

When you hover over the “interest” or  “list”, a little pencil shows up.  Click on it and this menu appears.  Simply click “Add to favorites” and you are all set.

My way is certainly not the only way but I hope that you are able to use this information to unclutter your newsfeed to your preferences.   Happy Facebooking!

Fantastic post! I am starting to make lists. After you assign someone to a list, how can you make sure they cannot see specific things on your FB page like status updates, friends, specific photos, etc….? Is there a way to control this?
