Locations aren’t always the most beautiful….| El Paso Photographer

Never underestimate the potential that a location can have for a photo session.  Sometimes you don’t have a choice but to roll with it.   It’s your job to make them awesome!  Here’s some tips how to take a postage stamp sized area or a “not-so-nice location but gorgeous light” and make it awesome!  Clients- I can’t imagine your thought process when we roll up on some of these locations but have faith in your photographer! They have an eye and vision for a location that many may not see!

Tips for Maximizing a Location

  • Watch your background
  • Wide open aperture
  • Shoot vertically if you have to
  • Go for angles!
  • Never count out a location because it doesn’t look “fabulous” – make it fab!
Don’t forget – if you want to shoot on personal/private property – get the owner’s permission!
Public storefronts and sidewalks are fair game but it never hurts to swing by and chit chat up the owners!

I wanted this tree with the beautiful cherry blossoms.  Here in Texas you don’t always get the luxury of choices for beautiful greenery so when you find it, use it!  For this location we are literally 15-20 feet right of a mexican eatery.

Fun house to go with the UP inspired theme, however, the parking lot is less than desirable!

I’m sure clients always cringe seeing the dumpster but look at the potential!!

Angle it!

Investigate your alley ways!

Alley way advice again!

Turn away from it!

Crop!

Use a little photoshop magic!

Visualize what you want and go at the right lighting time!

Angles again!

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

Absolutely fantastic. Your teaser post was very inspirational for me over the weekend and I ran out and scouted our so-so “historic downtown” where I live and then talked my client into going there for our shoot. She was absolutely thrilled. And your post today is giving me lots of ideas! Thank you. And I love love love Morgan Kervin’s work to. She is awesome. :)

Loved your location samples, Rachel! Sometimes the fun with a not-so-cool location is really pulling out all your creativity to make it work. Beautiful images as always!

I am always telling people that locations are secondary. The subject is the most important and even the locations that don’t look great can get the most interesting results. Great post.

Great post! I was thinking of doing a similar blog post but haven’t gotten around to it yet. This just shows that even in the smallest of towns, you can always find a good location

Thank you for this post! My town looks very similar to some of these locations. We do not have much in the way of public spaces or beautiful parks, but I have been eyeing up several of the older buildings in town and recently started glancing down alleyways as I go by to see what is worth coming back to check out. You have giving me reason to reinvestigate some places!
