Detouring from the regularly friday blog post because guess what? Life Happened!! It just did. and it does. I wrote a few weeks ago about professionalism on commenting on eachother’s facebook pages when clients can view in “A Dirty Office Rug.” I’m very protective of my clients and mentees. It’s my business I have to. Last night I hopped on to a vendor’s page to check out any posts or specials they may have posted, what greeted me was AWFUL. As most of America knows a big storm swept through the Northeast last week knocking out power, in fact, some areas have no power still. My family and many friends were included in this. So was Instagram, Amazon servers and a few other internet companies. Instead of seeing people rooting this vendor on (when you KNOW the vendor is stressing out because their systems were down) photographers were very unprofessionally on the page threatening to leave their business and to spread bad word about them. Because of an event the vendor couldn’t control?!?! The vendor couldn’t even contact all of their clients because they had no power. No power means so much more than no internet. No air conditioner. No warm water to bathe. No warm food. Stand still of business. I am ashamed and disappointed at the actions these “professionals” displayed. Not to say I wouldn’t have been upset, but sometimes we need to remember

To those that were threatening (and causing stress to an already bad situation) to take their business elsewhere, what if it was you that it had happened to and your photography clients had done it? How would you feel? What if your clients saw your nasty comments and took their business elsewhere? What happened to professionalism?
My reason for not having a business blog post today? My son had a fever of 101 last night and ended up at urgent care. Life. Happens. I’ve been lucky enough to have wonderful clients and mentees who understand this. I am so appreciative of this, even more so, after viewing those that couldn’t understand that in this virtual world there are real people on the other side of the computers.
July is dedicated to marketing. The marketing that was displayed by those who posted on this vendor’s wall is really negative. I recognized some names. Some I didn’t know. But it’s a public website, who knows who saw it. Did your client? What about a possible business vendor who wanted to create a relationship to help you in your business? We are all human. We make mistakes. But as business owner’s everything we do is marketing. Whether we realize it or not. So I guess today’s blog post is about marketing. It probably sounds like I’m grumbling and I am. This industry is amazing. There are so many amazing people. We have it hard enough fighting the onslaught of the digital age, copyright infringement and everyone seeking a deal. Why not just work together instead of against each other?
Have a wonderful friday. If this rains the Negative Nancy’s on me so be it. It is time we stand up against bullies (photog to photog, photog to vendor). If you have an issue, contact someone directly- don’t blast it on the web. Be mindful life happens. That we are human. That we are all trying to succeed. Slow Down. Be You. Life Happens.

Awww, Rachel. I agree with you. It’s horrible to see such mentality come out of people. Hope your son is better! I hate when mine are sick!
Rachel,
I hope your son is doing better!
I just LOVE this blog post more than you know. I hope that you don’t mind if I share? I’d love to spread the word about helping each other rather than taking every chance we get to take someone down.
Thanks so much for all of the inspiration and help you give others. You really are a good role model of what this industry should be like!
Thank you Rachel for another wonderfully written blog post! I love that you are not afraid to post what you really think and feel, and our industry needs leaders like you! I heart you and I heart Caleb and it’s great news that the little man is feeling better! Give that little one lots of squooshes and let life happen, no matter what any Negative Nancies want to throw your way!
Well I certainly hope your sweet boy is doing much better today! Life does happen. Frequently. And you are so right, we are all human, and with that needs to come basic human understanding of that fact.
I’m looking forward to seeing their results in handling my photo load! Thanks for the post and everything, Rachel!
I know of which vendor you’re referring, and having never heard of them before (until your recommendation yesterday to check them out) I was pulling high eyebrows at some comments I saw! These are “pro” photogs who I’m sure were concerned for their clients, but as you said turn it around and how would you feel if your clients treated YOU that way? Thank you for recommending this company, for since last night I have signed up for my free trial to test their service out.

People are just downright mean. And we live in a society of Me! Me! Me! that most of the time, people forget manners, common courtesy, and the fact that other people are just that… PEOPLE. This is why for the most part, I have to FORCE myself to be active in some communities. Sometimes, it’s just not worth the drama!
Very well said! I couldn’t agree more! It’s sad how if things happen to one, we expect everyone to understand and be patient and forgiving, but if it happens to anyone else, oh dear Lord why??? How?? It is a sad thing and I’m glad you spoke up about it specially since you have so many followers. I like you am more worried and am praying that those people have enough water, a cool place to stay at in this blistering heat! Thanks for this post!
My cat had to have emergency surgery this past weekend so it has totally messed up my editing and mailing schedule for disks. My clients have been so amazing and understanding. I expect the same of myself in any situation.
Rachel,
first, I hope your son is feeling better. Second, thank you for this blog. It seems, sadly, that this is coming up more and more lately. Social media is such a large part of our business but it also makes us very vulnerable to “keyboard cowboys” who hide behind their anonymous monitors and don’t feel any repercussions from railing on someone remotely. It’s sad and its a shame. You are totally right, life HAPPENS and we can not control everything, especially the weather. If I see a vendor that I support is going through something, I make sure to send a comment of support, even if I’ve only LIKEd their page, maybe never had a chance to shop with them yet, because I know that sometimes, that may be the only kind word someone hears that day. I was that kid in school that latched on to one kind word, one nice comment to get me through each day sometimes. Its no different bullying in person, in school, or on the internet. Thank you for calling attention to this shameful matter. It MUST stop. My support goes out to the Vendor who was affected by weather. Let them know that RB followers support them too!
Even though a sad event had to happen to bring this up, Im glad you did! Thank you Rachel! Photographers & vendors get it rough. We all need to be nice & support each other. Im seeing more and more photogs bullying each other about whos better and what not. We are all here doing this because we love & enjoy it. Why Is it so hard to support others but easier to bash? Hope your son gets well soon!
Beautifully said my friend! I hope Mr C is much better today! Bravo to you for standing up !
Great post, Rachel! I see this all too often!
That is really sad
I can’t believe people sometimes :/ Hopefully that vendor’s power is restored soon, having no electricity in this heat is no good!
